hey. I’m Jack!

(I don’t make people call me the brand voice guy in real life.)

Part copywriter, part brand strategist, part word nerd…

If you’re wondering what the hell I really do, don’t worry. There aren’t many brand voice consultants out there, I’ll give you that. (I know 4, including me.)

I won’t bore you with all the wanky consultant language. Instead, what I do is like all the best parts of brand strategy and copywriting mushed together. I’ll help you work out who your brand is, who you’re talking to and how you want to sound.

A lot of the time this bleeds into other stuff too. (Words and visuals go hand-in-hand, after all.)

In a nutshell, I use my almost-a-decade of experience writing words for some of the biggest, coolest or most up-and-coming-est brands in the world to help you pin down what your brand is and how to speak in a way that gets your customers say “holy shit, where has this brand been my whole life?”.

And then (if you need it), I’ll help you turn that voice into kick-ass copy.

So, erm, why the brand voice guy?

Well, it all started in a laboratory when I was taking photos of my high school crush.

Suddenly, I was bitten by a radioactive marketer.

Next thing I knew, I was emo-dancing down the street and word-slinging into battle with my arch-nemesis, Boring Brand Guy.

Alas, not.

The truth, as always, is far less interesting.

My real name, Jack Barclay, is also a London Bentley dealership that are really, really, really good at SEO.

Like, so good I often can’t find myself on Google.

So, to curry favour with the SEO Gods (and because somebody once said “oh, you’re the guy that does brand voice”), I went with The Brand Voice Guy.

It wasn’t until I’d built this website that I realised it makes me sound like the world’s lamest superhero.

A few vaguely interesting facts about Me

About pages can get a little dry. Here are a few facts about me to spice things up…

  • I’m deathly allergic to all kinds of nuts. In an alcohol-fuelled moment, I once accidentally ate a vegan friend’s walnut risotto and ended up in hospital looking like that scene from Hitch.
  • I’ve got a fancy pants Masters Degree from Kings College London in English Literature. (I still can’t spell  parralel  parallel on the first attempt, though.)
  • Allegedly, I’m an illegitimate decendent of Alfonso XII of Spain. He came over to the UK a long time ago and was a bit of a naughty boy. 9 months later, voila! My great-great-great grandmother was born. It’s all a bit Game of Thrones.
  • I was once in a band called The Pants Party. As you can probably guess, we weren’t very good. Like, at all.

A few brands I've helped 👉

Some nice stuff people have said about me

Outstanding talent. Jack is a lyrical genius, and his ability to transform a brand’s tone of voice is brilliant.  I cannot recommend him enough.

He turned one of our brands from lacking personality and voice, to a highly converting website that our customers always remember. Absolute legend!

Toni, CX Director, On the Money

It’s been a pleasure to work with Jack. He’s delivered on diverse briefs for different teams across the RNLI – consistently, in creative ways and with great results. He balances a clear love of language with a sharp focus on every piece’s purpose.

Mairead, Senior Editor, RNLI

Jack really IS the Brand Voice Guy. His ability to understand our brand was astounding. He ran a session to distil where we wanted to take the brand & then cut through the noise to revolutionise how we sounded.

Suddenly we sounded fresh, vibrant & engaging, even though we were saying the same thing…incredible!

Josh, Marketing Exec, fwip

Jack’s introduction to tone of voice has completely changed the way we think about copy for our clients. Our clients benefit from thinking deeply about how their businesses should be perceived and how their customers want to interact with the brand.

Dan, Owner, Kone Marketing

Our new tone of voice document hasn’t just given us a unified voice…

It has also given us a way to communicate that makes us stand out from our competitors, attracts lots of new customers and influences how every member of our team writes and talks about our business.

Miriam, PR Manager, Whisky Foundation

It’s rare that you come across a talent like Jack. I had the pleasure of working with Jack to deliver a number of projects and key initiatives.

To maintain such a high level of fervour seems to come naturally.
